BEYOND Tomorrow Summer Global Program 2014
～In Europe, U.S. , and Asia～
Overview
In the summer of 2014, BEYOND Tomorrow conducted the BEYOND Tomorrow Summer Global Program. The program provided an opportunity for high school and university students from Tohoku, who have overcome the adversities of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and aspire to become global leaders, to visit Europe, the United States, and the Philippines, to experience different cultures, to interact with leaders active in each region, and to consider their own role in society.
Objectives of the Program
- To learn models for global leadership through a short-term international experience, and reflect on how to apply that towards Tohoku’s recovery.v
- To be exposed to people and cultures from around the world, to communicate to them about Tohoku, and to build a model for global leadership from Tohoku.
The Program
Program in Euroope (France and Germany)
Dates: July 27 (Sun) to August 2 (Sat)
The participants travelled to France and Germany, both countries with long histories and rich cultures, and visited Airbus, which was built through a joint effort of European countries. They were able to see and learn about Europe’s impressive airline industry with their own eyes, learn first-hand about how Europe’s diverse cultures are a driving force behind business. By giving the participants the chance to walk the streets of France and Paris and to be exposed to the history and philosophies behind the sights, the program also provided opportunities for the education necessary for leadership.
Program in the U.S. (New York and Boston)
Dates: August 1 (Fri) to August 10 (Sunday)
Visiting the United States, which has continually utilized original thinking to break new ground, enabled participants to learn about how innovation has helped make society a better place, and they were able to give presentations on how they could apply these lessons to Tohoku’s recovery. The students were able to fulfill their role as ambassadors by interacting with leaders active in New York and Boston and communicating with them about current conditions in Tohoku.
Program in Asia (The Philippines)
Dates: August 13 to August 21
Participants visited Leyte, which suffered catastrophic damage from Typhoon Yolanda, and had the opportunity to interact with other people of their age who had been affected by a natural disaster and to consider what could be done to reduce disaster risk in the future. Through various activities such as beach activities in Cebu and presentations in Manila, the students constituted a step toward creating a platform for young people in the Asia-Pacific region, a region that frequently suffers from natural disasters, to communicate about disasters.
Participants
High school and university students who met the following eligibility requirements were invited to apply, and a total of 26 participants were selected through an application process (Europe: 10 participants; United States: 8 participants; Asia: 8 participants).
