We will be conducting an educational support project for young people affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
“The Hokuriku Leaders Initiative project”
BEYOND Tomorrow will launch the Hokuriku Leaders Initiative project in August 2024 to support young people affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake. The project aims to help overcome the damage caused by the earthquake and build a future together with the local community.
Eight months have passed since the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1st, and there are fewer opportunities to learn about the situation in the disaster-stricken areas through the news, leading to concerns that people’s interest is waning. In disaster-stricken areas, the initial emergency response has now ended, and the specific needs of the victims and local communities have become clear, making specific, long-term assistance necessary. At this time, victims require psychological support, so support and efforts aimed at caring for the mental health of each individual and rebuilding communities are also needed. Furthermore, this is a critical time to develop leaders for rebuilding the region, and the time to begin long-term planning for a sustainable recovery.
Through the Hokuriku Leaders Initiative project, we aim to provide educational opportunities to young people affected by the disaster, so that they will not lose hope even in the face of adversity, and will develop into people who have big dreams and can contribute to society.
About the support project “The Hokuriku Leaders Initiative”
We provide scholarships and a one-year human resources development program to high school and university students who have experienced adversity during their upbringing (abuse, separation or death of parents, poverty, etc.).
By providing opportunities for exchanges with high school students from the three Hokuriku prefectures and Niigata prefecture affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, as well as participation in Japan Future Leaders Summit (to be held in October 2024), we support young people who are currently facing difficulties due to the disaster in taking the initiative to look to the future of their community and themselves and envision a vision for it.
Project 1: Interaction with Wajima High School students
During the human resource development program “Summer Retreat 2024” (held in August), young people from all over the country who have faced adversity (scholarship students participating in BEYOND Tomorrow for one year) will interact with second-year Wajima High School students who are conducting research into the future of Noto, and together they will think about recovery from the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
Summer Retreat 2024 Overview
- Date and time: August 6th (Tue) – 10th (Sat), 2024
- Location: Ishikawa Prefecture and Fukui Prefecture
- Organizer: Global Fund for Education Assistance
- Co-organizer: Fukui Gakuen School Corporation, Fukui Minami High School
- Sponsor: Mihama Town, Fukui Prefecture and Mihama Town Board of Education
We will hold a summer training program “Summer Retreat 2024″ in Ishikawa and Fukui prefectures for students participating in BEYOND Tomorrow’s annual programs “Endeavor Program 2024” and “Japan Future Scholarship Program 2024”. The program aims to develop leadership skills in accordance with the scholarship recipients’ stage of development, with the theme of “nurturing empathetic leaders who can play an active role in all areas of society.”
During the exchange with Wajima High School students on Wednesday, August 7th, the students will exchange opinions in a two-hour discussion about coexistence with the local community through inquiry-based learning about recovery from the earthquake damage. Using the experiences of young people who have overcome various difficulties, we will think about what only they can say and do.
On the final day, BEYOND Tomorrow’s annual scholarship recipients will give presentations on the theme of “Actions that only ‘I’ can take to create a society in which everyone can shine.”
Project 2: Recruiting high school students from the Hokuriku region to participate in the “Japan Future Leaders Summit”
BEYOND Tomorrow will provide the opportunity to participate in the Japan Future Leaders Summit for high school students in the Hokuriku region who experienced the Noto Peninsula earthquake and are facing difficult circumstances, but who have a broad perspective and aspirations to be active both at home and abroad. Ten months after the earthquake, students from the Hokuriku region will deliver messages from the disaster-stricken areas. In addition, together with young people from all over the country, they will think about what they can do and what role they should play in society, having experienced disasters and various hardships, and make a presentation on the final day.
